Healing from Trauma

2220512839You’ve experienced something.

It’s not easy to express.

You don’t really think about it much. But sometimes, it’s unavoidable. And when it surges through, it’s uncomfortable… it’s painful. It might cause you to cringe… or tear up.

Other times, despite the tension and discomfort in your body, you can hide it.

But one thing’s for sure: It’s left its mark.

Here’s the thing about that “mark”…

It’s affected you… profoundly. It feels indelible, unable to be removed or affected.

Many of us have experienced trauma – to varying degrees of severity.

The mark it leaves on our minds and bodies is so powerful that it often comes to shape how we understand our entire life.

… sweeping it under the rug. As humans, we usually try to “tuck those things away.”

That’s understandable. After all, it’s our instinct to avoid discomfort.

If only it were that simple! I wish it were.

But here’s the truth: The more we avoid something, the more likely it is to manifest in other ways: frustration, exhaustion, disconnection, or “random” sadness, to name a few.

In therapy, we’ll address what happened.

But we’ll do it gradually… in a context of understanding, respect, humility, kindness, and confidentiality. These are the special characteristics that make this space conducive to healing trauma.

When it comes to trauma, only by facing what happened can we gain control of its after-effects. Through insight, education, and work, the pain can turn into purpose.

That is what therapists are trained to do.

This is a brave step you’re taking.
